About Mosakahiken Cree Nation
A proud Swampy Cree Nation and member of the Swampy Cree Tribal Council, at home on the shores of Moose Lake, Manitoba
Môsâkahikan: Mosakahiken Cree Nation (Cree: ᒨᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ, môsâkahikan) means "Moose Lake." Our main reserve is Moose Lake 31A, and the Nation also holds Moose Lake 31C, 31D, 31G and 31J.
Treaty: Mosakahiken Cree Nation is a signatory to Treaty 5. In 1876, Chief Otinikimaw (also known as Otinekimow or George Beaver) of the Moose Lake band signed Treaty Five on behalf of our people.
Population: As of June 2021, the Nation had 2,264 registered members, including 1,629 living on their own reserve.
Location: Moose Lake is about 728 km northwest of Winnipeg by road, east of The Pas, the nearest large town.
Culture and Community: Cree is spoken in our community, and logging, fishing and trapping are practiced in the Moose Lake area. Frontier Mosakahiken School teaches Nursery to Grade 12, and our community is served by a health centre and a nursing station.
